Warehouse & Logistics News – The Annual 2019/20

Award Winning Expertise in Logistics Consulting

  1. WLN – What are your best-known products and services?

The Supply Chain Consulting Group (SCCG) boasts a multi- award-winning team of consultants established since 2004.  SCCG is now recognised as one of the leading Warehouse and Logistics Consultancies synonymous with high standards and a strong reputation for building sustainable partnerships and providing detailed yet pragmatic solutions and implementable strategies to any aspect of a company’s Logistics and Warehouse Operations, with clients across the UK, Europe and Africa.

  1. WLN – What new products and services will you be launching next year?

With continuing pressure on warehouse availability and labor costs, interest in automation and mechanisation increases. We receive many enquiries for low level mechanisation (such as simple conveyor systems) up to fully automated facilities.

Our fastest growing sectors are Retail, Food and Beverage including many of the UKs leading supermarket chains, convenience store wholesalers, world leading FMCG suppliers, and Global iconic brands.

To maintain our capability and resource to meet demand we have recruited three additional consultants to start in January 2020. Their combined experience includes a mix of retail and automation specific consultants details of which will be released in January.

    3. WLN – Tell us about your business highlights in 2019

Our year ending June 2019 showed a 15% increase previous year turnover and this current year ending June 2020 is also on course for similar growth. Contributing to this success was 52 new projects with new and existing clients.

We have enjoyed working with new clients including Aldi, Iceland, Nestle, Foodbuy, Muscle Foods, Porsche, Robins and Day, Oakwood Fuels and Rolawn, to name but a few. This in addition to repeat business with existing clients including Co-Op, Bestway, Avara Foods, Bettys & Taylors of Harrogate, Diageo, Bunzl, PPG, British Gypsum and may more.

2019 has been a busy year for brand awareness with a stand at Intralogistex in February. In September we had prominent stands in two of the halls at the NEC for IMHX, the UK’s largest Intralogistics event.

SCCG was headline sponsor for the Cold Chain Federation (formerly FSDF) AGM at Lords Cricket Ground in May and for The Future of Refrigerated Transport Conference at the National Motorcycle Museum in September.

We are the proud Exclusive Sponsor for The Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport Fellows Lunch in its Centenary year in early December at the RIBA venue in London.

      4. WLN – What challenges will the business environment offer to your industry in the coming year? How will you turn these challenges into opportunities?

The most prevalent changes for business we believe will impact logistics operations are as follows:

Environmental Footprint and sustainable solutions; Automation and AI; electric vehicles; Blockchain technology for increased data availability; and Population shifts from rural areas to cities.

As specialist consultants we keep abreast of industry trends and work with industry bodies and suppliers of technologies to ensure that we present and implement solutions to mitigate the disruptive impact, and leverage the benefits of the positive impacts, of change on our clients businesses.

  1. WLN – What industry sectors do you see offering you the most potential next year?

Retail and FMCG sectors that we specialise in currently will offer the most potential in 2020 due to concerted efforts to establish ourselves as the leading consultancy in those sectors. We have many long-standing relationships with clients and are considered trusted partners with many retailers and FMCG suppliers. We will continue to benefit from repeat and referral business through these established and valuable relationships.

  1. WLN – Are you investing in new premises over the next 12 months? What about recruitment, staff development and training?

We moved our Slough office into new premises in early 2019 and have no plans to move from either our Slough or Leamington Spa offices, which between them will house eleven of our sixteen staff from January 2020.

2019 saw the promotion of Marta Biela, to Operations Manager and Natasha Raymond, to Marketing Manager. We also welcomed Alexandra Nedelea as Marketing Coordinator to maintain the flow of information between marketing, sales and operations in the business.

In January 2020 the team will be bolstered by three more Senior Consultants already recruited. The focus is on engaging talent and expertise in Warehouse Operations, Automation and Transport operations, further improving our customer service offering.

  1. WLN – How do your expertise and strategy solutions help businesses become cleaner and reduce their carbon footprint?

It can be simply by reducing the number of times products are handled. In one warehouse we achieved a reduction of over 500,000 forklift truck movements per annum by the introduction of a simple conveyor system with five P&D points at a minimal investment, which at the same time increased the throughput capacity of the facility by 50%.

Another example is where we reduced the footprint by saving one million pallet miles per annum for a food manufacturer, by consolidating a previously disparate logistics network and distribution strategy.

These are two examples of the type of work we do, day-in, day-out.

  1. WLN – Are you involved in any major trade shows or other industry events next year?

We have committed as the headline sponsors for The Cold Chain Federation AGM lunch and the main sponsors for the annual conference. Further sponsorship commitments with other industry bodies are in negotiation and will be confirmed in 2020.

  1. How do your solutions help customers increase the level of automation in their business?

With continuing pressure on warehouse labor costs and availability, interest in automation increases. We help companies to; Evaluate the appropriate level of automation; Develop Requirements Definition and Support to Concept Design; Vendor selection and engagement; Implementation support and Programme Management.

Our team is experienced in a range of technologies and will choose the most appropriate level of automation and investment for an operation. The mantra being don’t just automate for the sake of it as ‘automation does not automatically make things better it just automates them’. Therefore, companies need independent experts, like us, to assess their true requirements and ensure that productivity is improved, and flexibility is maintained in its operations through the introduction of automation.

  1. How do you help customers make optimum use of their existing warehouse space?

Our warehouse consultants bring experience of many warehouse design and optimisation projects across many sectors working closely with your team ensuring that the options considered and rationale behind our recommendations are well understood and developing solutions for all areas of materials handling, procurement, and warehouse and inventory management.

SCCG take an evidence-based approach, analysing data from systems and observing existing operations to gain a clear picture of a client’s specific requirements and constraints.

SCCG provides predicted benchmark productivity rates for warehouse activities and advise on the design and adoption of performance measurement regimes.

All our analysis and solutions specific to client requirements are presented with clear and concise rationale and where appropriate costed and tested. SCCG clients benefit from the company’s in-house CAD facilities for warehouse layouts, racking configuration, automation, MHE and logistics resource planning.

  1. And finally, if you had to sum up your company in a Hashtag what would it be?
