Hammonds Furniture Case Study

Hammonds manufactures and installs made-to-measure bedrooms, home offices and kitchens, understanding that off-the-shelf, free-standing furniture simply doesn’t suit every home. Their bespoke fitted furniture is therefore tailored to their customers and their homes and is built to last using expert workmanship and quality materials.

With smart storage options and clever design tricks, Hammonds endeavor to help their customers make the most of high, or angled ceilings, and create a stunning floor-to ceiling looks to unlock even the smallest rooms.

Hammonds has 150 high street showrooms and a field sales team who undertake the design process with customers on site and agree a price and lead time for delivery and installation, usually 4 to 6 weeks from agreed sale. Following the order from the customer, Hammonds send in a surveyor to confirm the full Bill of Material for manufacturing and fitting.

The Hammonds’ factory and National Distribution Centre at Hinckley manufacture orders on an average 4-day production lead-time, with the production schedules locked-down 6-days in advance. Hammonds wished to conduct a Supply Chain Review, to establish the cost benefits, and increase flexibility for manufacturing.

Hammonds recognised that they required expert guidance for this project, and thus employed the services of the Specialist Supply Chain and Logistics Consultants at The Supply Chain Consulting Group (SCCG), to make a detailed assessment.

The experienced SCCG team reviewed Hammonds’ Supply Chain, including analysing the potential for moving products in bulk to Retail Supply Chains (RSCs), to optimise the number and location of RSCs and allocation of fitters, to determine the benefits of dynamic trunk scheduling, to establish the benefits of scheduling fitters, to design an inventory policy, and to redesign despatch area layouts.

SCCG presented a set of recommendations to Hammonds, and provided a high-level implementation plan and subsequently supported the Hammonds team to improve their operations.
