Nisa Case Study

The Supply Chain Consulting Group Conducts Strategic Network Review For Nisa

The brainchild of two grocery entrepreneurs – Dudley Ramsden and Peter Garvin – Nisa was launched in 1977, to protect the interests of independent retailers against the insurgence of the national supermarket chains.

Since its acquisition by the Co-op Group in May 2018, Nisa now supports more than 4,000 stores. Nisa is flexible; enabling them to trade under their own fascia, to join the ever expanding Nisa symbol group, or to choose a co-branded fascia option.

Nisa partnership enables retailers access to a vast product range, and award-winning own label lines through both its Heritage and Co-op own brand ranges and an industry leading distribution network. Retailers can additionally take advantage of an array of services including marketing, a training academy, IT and public relations; all backed-up by a strong support network covering member services and technological support.

In the 41 years since it was established, Nisa has developed exponentially, and with a bright future ahead, there will no doubt be many further developments to come as the business evolves to better meet the needs of its’ members.

Following business growth, Nisa engaged our Specialist Logistics and Supply Chain Consultants, requiring a strategic, independent and external view of how their logistics network could be optimised.

To begin, the Logistics Specialists visited Nisa stores to conduct a review of Nisa’s existing distribution networks, to better analyse operational processes and the current ways of working and furthermore, to understand the issues and concerns of members.

Areas considered for analysis under review included: warehousing, transport, inventory policy, technology requirements, and Service Level Agreements. Further areas were also reviewed, to ensure a comprehensive review could be conducted. These included but were not limited to: delivery frequency, delivery volumes, budgets for transport, and peak stock-holding.

Employing a combination of network modelling tools, the Consultants were able to model distribution network options for Nisa’s optimised future network; whilst simultaneously considering the requirements identified in the initial review, analysis and workshops.

Utilising the data collected, the experienced team of Consultants analysed the business and reported on assumptions to be used for business growth.

Upon completion of their review and analysis of Nisa, the Specialist Logistics and Supply Chain Consultants gained a comprehensive understanding of Nisa’s ideal distribution network design, based on delivering the required level of service to all registered shareholder stores.

“Employing a combination of network modelling tools, The Supply Chain Consulting Group were able to model distribution network options for Nisa’s optimised future network; whilst simultaneously considering the requirements identified in the initial review, analysis and workshops.” Operations Director – Nisa
